Together building the first climbing kiln in the western world in St Ives.

Drawing on a decade spent in Japan as an artist and potter, Bernard Leach returned to England with good friend and potter Shōji Hamada to establish a pottery in the existing artists colony in St Ives - aiming for a revival of traditional pottery, made by hand to counter growing industrial pottery production. Their approach held strong emphasis on championing the importance of the ‘Artist-Craftsman’ creating beautiful, functional, unique pots that enrich everyday use inspired by natural surroundings, full of expressive detail.

Leach’s Standard Ware was first developed by Bernard Leach and his son, David Leach in 1946 and was produced until Bernard Leach’s death in 1979. Some 25 years later The Leach Pottery was renovated, restored and re-opened in 2008 when they re-launched their new ‘Standard Ware’ currently in production by Lead Potter Roelof Uys and a team of skilled production potters and apprentices.

The Leach Pottery to this day continues to positively champion the traditional craft and heritage of pottery with the artistic qualities and expression of ‘handmade’ - staying true to Bernard Leach & Shōji Hamada’s vision, whilst supporting emerging talent, developing new thinking and ensuring the pottery thrives.

。
Potters Portraits used with kind permission from The Leach Pottery + Photography from our visit to The Leach Pottery Museum 2025
