Gaiwan (1) by Yoko Romita
Hand thrown in Hampshire
Approximate measurements:

Understated and classic in its form, excellent weight and proportion with a wide open bowl style and excellent silhouette, gently rising from its foot to the flared lip and tall finial. Crafted from iron rich red clay and blended with white clay, unglazed and reduction fired, creating rich and even deep plum or dark chocolate tones. The effects are similar to a Nanban wood firing. Holding beautifully in the hand with with a smooth, gently tactile feel of the clay and soft sheen.

Handmade and unique, Handwash recommended.

Yoko Romita is based in Southampton producing stoneware pieces from her home studio, her work has a real understated presence to it, allowing the beauty of the natural clay to fully appreciated. Yoko draws on her own cultural heritage, with influences from Japanese ceramics and enjoys incorporating aesthetics and motifs from nature such as flowers to bring a femininity to her work.

Yoko started working with clay initially by self teaching whilst at a small studio in Berlin, then attended The Corrie Bain International School of Ceramics, followed by an Angels Farm Pottery apprenticeship then became Artist in Residence at Guldagergaard International Ceramics Centre, together with learning the craft from many ceramicists during her travels to Denmark, Japan and Korea.
