Hand Thrown in Heguri, Nara, Japan.
Approximate measurements: 8cm H x 14.5cm ø 300ml
Beautifully formed footed Katakuchi Chawan with a flowing organic form that's full of character, a gently rising bowl form with stepped rim and pressed dimples adjacent to the pouring spout. Skilfully and carefully crafted from stoneware clay decorated in Munehiro-san's original handmade ash glaze of blueish green grey tones that catches the light beautifully, with cobalt blues that cascade down the bright surface and remind us of clouds in the sky, with some nice drippy features over toasted clay - a soft shine and smooth yet tactile feel. Holding beautifully in the hands allowing a generous space for preparing your Matcha.
Each handmade and unique, therefore slight variations in shape, size and glaze will occur. Handwash recommended.
We were honoured to meet Munehiro-san during our 2024 R&D spring trip to Japan. Munehiro-san is based in Heguri, Nara and in Wazuka. Having studied first in Kyoto, then in Okayama at a Bizen kiln focusing on highlighting the natural traits from the the clay, then at a Akahada kiln in Nara focusing on bringing out certain colours in clay and glaze. He has been able to combine all his experience to create these beautiful and functional teawares from his own ‘Tsukitachi-kama’ kiln.
Munehiro-san's main focus is on the production of teaware for Sencha and leaf tea consumption, since his wife’s family tea farm produces predominately Sencha, Hojicha as well as other leaf teas. His teawares are intended for everyday use and enjoyment, not just for special occasions but enjoyed for any relaxing moment.
