Woodfired Shino Chawan by Linda Unsworth
Hand Thrown in Pembrokeshire, Wales
Approximate measurements: 7.5cm H x 10.5cm ø

A beautifully rustic woodfired stoneware Chawan with an hourglass form emphasised by an incised band around the body giving the form a wide base for ease of whisking. Glazed with some shino (besides the glazed interior) but mostly left unglazed intentionally to highlight the natural beauty of the clay. Creating a very painterly feel and appearance to the piece - that’s totally unique and full of energy. Splashes of peachy, orange shino and cool greys lay on top of the warming toasted tones of the clay. The surface is full of complex Dartmoor granite inclusions creating an interesting natural speckling - it has a soft shine, tactile feel and dimples making the piece a joy to handle and use.

We have 6 available. Each handmade and unique, therefore slight variations in shape, size will occur. Handwash recommended.

1 ~ The surface has a mostly natural clay tone with some light toasted areas with a nice amount of iron blasts, pale peachy inside. Underneath, a raised spiral detail inside the foot ring.
2 ~ The positioning in the kiln has lead to this Chawan being one half natural clay tone and the other half having warming tones, inside warm peachy shino and a soft spiral in the well of the bowl.
3 ~ The overall form is more pronounced perhaps slightly lower too, with a good coverage of toasted tones, shino splatters and iron blasts. Peachy, speckled interior.
4 ~ Good details from clay, warming tones blend with natural clay and expensive shino, everything working together here. Soft shine from shino inside with a little fly ash.
5 ~ Smaller shoulder and lip. Muted tones and satisfying toasted areas on the surface. Pale peachy tones inside, with a good amount of fly ash and subtle spiral detail at the base.
6 ~ Light and bright tones across the piece. Creamy white and soft peachy tones of shino. Very tactile surface.

Based in North Pembrokeshire, producing work from her home studio. Linda is a self taught potter, who enjoys the meditative experience that’s created by working with such natural elements as raw clay, glazes and the rhythm of her momentum wheel. Producing beautiful wood fired ceramics that really highlight this long process leaving visible traces of flame flashes and fly ash on her pots. Her approach to the form and style of her work is inspired by her natural surroundings and informed by Eastern aesthetics through traditional Japanese & Korean pottery and philosophy and her love of tea drinking.
